Nothing is cat-proof. We say that first because you may see "cat-proof fabric" advertised in places, & it's pretty much just a lie. A determined cat can damage any fabric. What exists is better described as cat-resistant; fabrics that give a cat no reason or ability to dig in.

Leather & Vinyl

Leather & vinyl are the closest thing to a cat-proof upholstery. Their smooth, tough surface lend claws nothing to grip & no weave to hook into. Most cats lose interest after a swipe or two. While leather is good for those with expensive tastes, vinyl is the budget backup option with nearly as good performance. As a bonus, both wipe clean & are easily maintainable.

Velvet

The nice part about velvet is that in addition to being unsatisfying for cats, it's tremendously comfortable. The pile is so short & dense that most cats can't get their claws hooked properly into it, & modern velvets can be manufactured in a dizzying array of colors & patterns suitable for almost any use case. Mind that a determined cat devoid of better options or in possession of an exceptionally persistent mind can still find velvet to be a preferred clawing surface, so while most cats are deterred, no promises can be issued.

What to Avoid

Loose weaves are a scratching invitation. Chenille, boucle, & anything with a visible loop gives claws something to hook into. Performance fabrics like Crypton & Sunbrella resist stains & moisture, but they're still woven, & a cat can still claw them.

A Note of Warning

Cats are an upholsterer's best friend. No fabric is immune to all cats, & even vinyl has its foes amongst the felines. Some cats scratch leather, & others love velvet. We occasionally joke about offering a free kitten with every completed upholstery job, because job security comes in small, furry packages.
